Workplace Health And Safety

There have been mishaps and cases of illness in your organization which has demotivated you and your employees. The solution for the problem lies in creating the foundation of the injury-free culture, creating "zero injury,"enviroment and establishing true ownership for this vision amongst everyone in the organization. This new vision will change your approach to, and thinking about, the basic mechanisms that drive safety performance.

Workplace health and safety has become a primary issue for any organization and especially if you are moving with a vision of zero injury environment, it is important to educate all personnel about safety rules, workers' compensation and their duties and responsibilities in the workplace. The more workplace safety tips, education and training you give employees, the more you will find that problems are reduced. Workplace health and safety training needs to address some general safety topics and safety topics specific to a particular work area or department. General topics will answer the very basic question-Why workplace safety is essential? Description of the most common types of workplace injuries and how these injuries might have been prevented. Then there maybe, some specific topics related to safety procedures in various specific work areas, departments which should be designed to suit the needs of the staff demographics. Ensure that everyone in the workplace is properly trained, including managers, supervisors, full-time, part-time and temporary employees. Also allow only properly authorized and instructed employees to provide detailed safety training customized for a specific job area. Pay particular attention to employees learning new operations to make sure they have the proper job skills and awareness of hazards is developed.

Health and Safety in the workplace is like any ongoing project, the workplace safety plan and training needs should be evaluated at regular intervals to ensure that the most current workplace-safety issues are addressed. You may establish a safety process through a workplace-safety committee. This committee will be responsible for surveying the types of accidents and injuries that took place in the previous time segment on a quarterly, semi-annual or annual basis. Report about areas posing possible hazards that have not yet resulted in injuries or accidents. This report will help identify those departments that need additional training or supervision.

Training programs should be scheduled for these departments and the design should include the issues pertaining to the accidents or injuries and a special hands-on training. A shorter, general refresher course could also be given to the people in the other departments. Some routine in-service training for all departments will keep staff alert and sharp as to safety policies, procedures and expectations. Supervisors and managers should be made responsible for daily monitoring of workplace safety practices and should be held accountable for mentoring, advising and counseling staff members who are not performing. The supervisors should have the authority to recommend a staff member for remedial training, if required. They should be counseled on helping injured workers fill out the necessary workers' compensation forms along with keeping track of injured workers and their return to work. While working towards a ''zero injury'' environment, this could help create satisfied employees rather than those who are insecure about losing their job, not getting benefits, or wanting to "beat the system."
